Characteristics of an ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

He:

Uses coercion and threats:

Making threats to hurt you, leave you, commit suicide, or making you do illegal things.

Uses economic abuse:
Preventing you from getting or keeping a job, making you ask for money, taking your money.

Exercising power and control:
Treating you like a servant, making all the big decisions, acting the “King of the Castle”, or the “Man of the House.”

Using children:
Making you feel guilty about the children, using the children to relay messages, threatening to take away or harm the children, harming the children.

Minimizing, Denying and Blaming:
Making light of the abuse, saying it didn’t happen, saying you caused it.

Using Isolation:
Controlling what you do, who you see, who you talk to, what you read, where you go, justifying acts using jealousy.

Using Emotional Abuse:
Putting you down, making you feel bad about yourself, calling you names, making you think you’re crazy, making you feel guilty.

Using Intimiation:
Making you afraid by using looks, actions, gestures, smashing things, destroying your property, abusing pets, displaying weapons.
